Behind the Post: Visiting the Programs & Meeting the Women
After half a day of traveling, I landed on the tarmac in Kigali, admittedly tired but excited for the journey ahead. As a social media and digital intern for Africa Development Promise, I was to spend the week in Rwanda and Uganda interviewing the women who make up ADP’s programs. I was eager to meet and interact with the women whose stories I’d spent so much time reading and sharing.
The women I met in Rwanda and Uganda, each with unique jobs, ambitions, and stories, inspired me with their determination and adversity they’d overcome. During interviews with local officials, I was constantly asked if I was married, and the fact that I was not was met with confusion. I understood their confusion because early marriage is expected in these cultures where the family holds great significance. This experience highlighted the vital role of Africa Development Promise’s programs. Through ADP's programs, women can pursue income-generating opportunities that enable them to follow their dreams while making meaningful contributions to their communities. These programs provide them with the essential skills and opportunities they might not have otherwise had.
Furthermore, the significance of women-led collectives—such as those I witnessed in the sewing program, various agricultural cooperatives, and beyond—was undeniable. These collectives challenge traditional gender norms and stereotypes by proving women's capabilities in leadership and entrepreneurship. When I introduced myself to a crowd of students at a local school, I was met with laughter. While they may have laughed for several reasons, I couldn't help but feel that part was because I was a young woman. This experience reinforced the importance of creating women-led spaces, something Africa Development Promise actively champions. These spaces empower women to take ownership of their goals and confidently pursue their aspirations.
I was deeply moved by the story of Veneranda, a determined entrepreneur in Rwanda who owned a thriving clothing and shoe store. During our interview, she spoke with pride about her accomplishments but clarified that she wasn’t stopping there. Her ambitions stretched beyond her current success—she was actively working toward obtaining a driver’s license. This would allow her to bypass the middleman and increase her profits, demonstrating her resourcefulness and commitment to growth. Her story is a testament to the perseverance and determination that define the women participating in Africa Development Promise’s programs. Additionally, it was clear that she inspired her community as groups gathered around us, eager to hear what she had to say.
Visiting the programs I had spent so much time writing about was an incredible and enriching experience. It was valuable not only because I gathered outstanding digital content, but also because the women I met left a lasting impact on me. Their stories and determination inspired me to keep dreaming, learning, and giving back to those who have supported me along the way.
