Rwanda, also known as the Land of a Thousand Hills, has a landscape that is very challenging for productive agriculture. With climate change related droughts, floods and water scarcity, rural farmers are becoming increasing vulnerable and less able to move out of poverty. Among the cooperatives that Africa Development Promise supports, improved irrigation is a top priority. To help cooperatives cope and safeguard their farm investments, Africa Development Promise addresses their irrigation needs by providing locally appropriate water systems. Depending on the size of the farm, the water systems can vary from solar-powered deep well submersible pumps to government subsidized, locally assembled, small scale irrigation technology (SSIT). For example, in 2018 Africa Development Promise completed the construction of a gravity-fed system with a large water tank that provides water for both drinking and irrigation. The goal is to provide labor-saving tools while building cooperative resilience to address climate change issues.
